Meet the Locals

Unlike transient pods that migrate across the oceans, Dolphin Bay is home to a permanent, resident population of Bottlenose Dolphins. Biologists believe there are around dozens of individuals living out their entire lifespans here in Bocas del Toro.

Because these waters are so tranquil and entirely protected from the rougher Caribbean wave breaks, the dolphins use this bay specifically for socializing, breeding, and safely raising their young calves.

Mangrove Roots

The Mangrove Nursery

The edges of Dolphin Bay, right up to the Finca Montezuma dock, are lined with ancient red mangroves. Their dense, branching underwater root systems serve as a nursery for the entire ecosystem.

Small fish, crustaceans, and jellyfish hide in the roots, providing an abundant and reliable food source for the dolphins. It is a perfectly balanced biological loop that sustains life year-round.

Ethical Observation Guidelines

At Finca Montezuma, we strictly adhere to principles that protect the pod and minimize human stress on the bay.

Never Chase

We drop anchor or float quietly in kayaks, allowing curious dolphins to approach us. We do not drive towards them.

Engines Off

Motor noise causes underwater distress. Whenever possible in the bay, engines belong off.

Observe Quietly

Shouting or splashing scares away marine life. We advocate for silent admiration and minimal disturbance.
